Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans
The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
