Doris Makes Irish Selection While McCarthy Omitted
Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has selected skipper Doris in his Ireland team for the autumn Tests, but Joe McCarthy is absent.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-player group, however Irish rugby authorities says new provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".
Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected with Farrell opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at full-back.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not receive a international appearance.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is retained, and veteran Ulster second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain should the skipper does not regain fitness in time to face the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
