The English along with Wales Drawn Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a convincing win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
